Flanders Mooiste – Summer Belgian Classic Sportive

Excellent! We've got you marked as coming and we'll see you there!

About the event:

Created by Graham Channon

Hi all.

As some of you may be aware, over the past few years GS Avanti (well, Chris Dines really) has organised an annual pilgrimage to Bruges for a weekend to take part in the Tour of Flanders Sportive on a Saturday before watching the pros suffer a little less than us on the same course, but with the added bonus of beer and frites in our hands.

As the Tour of Flanders is always early in the season, it sometimes suffers from questionable weather and this year clashed with Easter resulting in a smaller group. I’m looking to organise a club event (with help again from Chris Dines) to ride the ‘Flanders Mooiste’ event which takes place on Sunday 9th September this year.

The Flanders Mooiste event is different to the early season version, as this ride starts and finishes at the Eddy Merckx cycling museum, at the Blaarmeersen in Ghent, so you don’t need to get to Antwerp for the start and worry about transport as much. It still takes in the local classic cobbled climbs and flat sections, but misses out the 80-100 miles of flat’ish riding you experience before the hills on the early season sportive.

Ride length options are from 25 to 200 km

Each rider will receive:

  • Accident insurance (no helmet = not insured)
  • Course stewards to show the way / the start/finish
  • Plenty of refreshments* at each checkpoint, offering Etixx sports nutrition and drinks, water and a wide range of fruit and biscuits
  • Technical assistance and breakdown service
  • Info card showing the hills, cobblestone sections and refreshment zones
  • Excellent signage along the route
  • Timekeeping and video recording for each participant
  • Medical service at every checkpoint and at the finish
  • Coffee before the race start
  • Secure bike storage
  • Changing rooms with showers
  • Massage at the finish
  • Animation on the course and at the start and finish

To make it easy for all, I am happy to organise the online team entry and make a bulk payment and organise transfer info for you to send me your fees.

A group is classed as 10 riders or more, so with past attendance of these events in mind I am confident we will exceed the minimum requirements.

If entering as a group the rider fee ranges from 10 euros for the 25km to 17 euros for the 200km route. If entering individually with less than 10 riders it’s 2 euros less. Your registration includes a deposit of €5 for your number plate, which contains a chip. Deposits are returned at the finish or exchanged for an original T-shirt.

Expected total costs per person are a little tricky to advise, as this is dependent on how many of us take part, how many cars are required and what format the hotel and possibly Chris’ house overnight stay solution looks like, but I’d suggest it would be between £160 – £200 exc. food and drink. This would include, travel, petrol, Le-Tunnel costs, accommodation and ride entry.

The format would likely be, depart from the G Saturday morning, arrive in Bruges mid afternoon, Bill/Chris pick up rider info and number packs, gentle ride around regular warm-up route around Bruges, evening meal and drinks. Ride on Sunday followed by local food and drink Sunday night. Monday options of early short ride then slightly later return journey or return earlier.

There is lots to decide on and arrange, so for now I would ask you to show a statement of intent by clicking the ‘attending’ button and join us on this fantastic opportunity.

I’ll communicate more in terms of deadlines for commitment, but I anticipate needing firm answers and ride fees at least around mid-July.

Any questions please don’t hesitate to let me know.

    Hi all.
After an initial flood of interest it has slowed down a bit with 6 of us at present.
That’s a great number and it will be a great weekend, but as less than 10 I can’t enter us as a team/group, so we’ll likely need to enter individually and collect our rider packs as a group the day before. No hassle as Ghent isn’t far from Bruges. I’ll see if we get anymore interest, then around mid-July’ish we’ll start to formalize plans etc

    Thanks all
