We’re not just a road cycling club, as many of our members enjoy mountain biking on the local trails and taking part in both the summer and winter cyclo-cross series.
Cyclo-Cross consists of a mixture of riding, running and sliding over challenging courses using modified road bikes. It is becoming increasingly popular in the UK and the typical Cyclo-Cross season runs from September to January.
Underneath several layers of mud, you’ll see GS Avanti jerseys in the London & SE Cyclo-Cross league during the winter months (http://www.londonxleague.co.uk).
Some of our members also compete in the London Cyclo-Cross summer series in July and August (http://www.summerseries.co.uk)
Cyclo-Cross is incredibly fun, mucky and a great way to keep fit and improve your bike handling skills during the colder months. If you fancy getting involved then let us know by posting in the forums.
Most of our members ride their mountain bikes as a solo pursuit, but throughout the year there are several opportunities to get involved in MTB races with other club members or boast about your solo endeavours on the forums.
It has become a tradition of GS Avanti to enter a team in the Brighton Big Dog (http://www.brightonbigdog.com) team relay. This is a great day out that takes place at Stanmer Park in Brighton and features on a circuit that takes about 45 minutes to get round. The course is open for six hours and the aim is for the relay team to complete as many laps as possible in this time.
As a club we do not host any regular mountain bike club rides, but we have an active base of mountain bike riders and the forum is a great place to find out what’s going on and organise rides.
