Hi reader

I’m writing from my office, looking across a very grey, cold London landscape – and the sleet is starting to turn to snow. It reminds me of the weather a group of us suffered for 10 hours at the Tour of Flanders Sportive in 2015 – wind, sleet and freezing drizzle until the final hour. What on earth were we doing – we were paying to do it as well. But, great memories and a great achievement. The evening beers in warm cellar bar never tasted better, and watching the pro’s suffer the following day made it seem even more worthwhile.

Last year (2016) we watched the pro-race in T shirts and were more in danger of sunburn than frostbite!

This weekend’s rides, including KK taster ride.

OK, my preamble leads me to say that the weather this weekend looks quite “Flanders 2015” . Please keep an eye on the website for cancelled rides, not least the 8am Saturday ride that Nick Patow will either lead or cancel. Saturday Ride – Click Here.

On Sunday we have a “Kentish Killer taster ride”. Steve Rodgers is organising this with the help of others. We have around 15 guests who want to experience a shorter version of the KK taking in some of the local climbs. This will include a group going at G4 level pace. As our G4 leader for the weekend has had to drop out, I suggest that those that want a G4 pace join that taster ride – it will be good to mix guests and club members. There will also be a faster group running at G1/2 pace. Coffee stop at Ide Hill on way back in.

I will lead a G2 paced ride – it’s a favourite of mine, the Basted Winter route. It takes us through some of the most ancient hamlets and villages in Kent. It’s 50 miles, and we won’t be stopping – 16/17mph average. Click Here

Phil Hookway is leading a G3 paced ride to the Velo Café in Tunbridge Wells – 50 miles at 15 average. Click Here

The weather might mean a low turnout on Sunday, but I can guarantee you will find an Avanti presence from 9am outside the Royal Oak – we can sort groups according to conditions on the morning.

KCA 3 UP Time Trial on 5 March

Jo Stephens-Smith is coordinating teams (if there is interest) for the KCA 3 UP – ie Time Trials teams of 3. Despite being VERY early season, it’s a very popular event based around 25 miles of the flatlands of New Romney. Several people are thinking about it I believe, so please indicate your interest on THIS FORUM

Club Kit

We are delighted to say that the GS Avanti kit is now on display at Cycles UK in Orpington – which will also be our base for delivering any stock your order.

If you are thinking of ordering new kit for the remaining winter months, please place your order by 15th February – all details on how to order are on the club website.

Have a good weekend - be brave, but be safe.
