Hi Avanti Member

I’ve been off the bike since June, and a lot’s happened since. I’ll avoid political comments in a club newsletter, other than to say that one of my family (when watching Trump’s victory speech) said I was developing a similar profile to big Donald. Wondering whether the comment was linked to politics (errr……) or business (well…….) I then realised it was focused on waistline (No…..that’s far worse!!). Time to dust the turbo down (if I can find it), and give up the Belgian Beer…….or at least try to.

Memories of Brands Hatch

Hot of the press- just take a look at these fantastic pictures from our championship winning day at Brands Hatch. Big thanks to John Edwards who organised local photographers to take the pictures. Have to say that some are stunning – not least the huge “Team Avanti” shot. SEE HERE

Keeping fit over Winter

It’s veering towards winter, so time to add some indoor training to maintain fitness over the coming months. It’s not quite pinned down yet, but we will shortly be announcing plans, led by Lee Staples, for a series of 12 evening, indoor, training sessions – suitable for any club member and free. In addition to turbo based training, there are likely to be some interesting extras this year, including talks by visiting experts. Watch this space.

If there is sufficient interest, Lee is also organising another floodlit cyclopark session – CLICK HERE to find out more, AND to say whether you are likely to attend.

Kentish Killer 2017

For the second year in a row, the Long Route sold out all 900 places within 24 hours. Well done to Lee Powell who has taken over the lead organisation from myself, and also to Steve Rodgers who did so much on the marketing side. I hooked up with some of the clubs who bring big numbers to the event – and for the third year in a row, London Dynamo will have a fifty strong entry. Also, it’s impressive that VC Norwich have a team of 25 arriving at Brands Hatch at 8am on Sunday 26 February 2017!

We’ve developed a lot of experience at running this event, and it generates a lot of cash for KSS Air Ambulance together with many of the cycling activities the Club supports. As ever it’s totally reliant on club members helping out, so do respond to Lee’s calls for support.

Tour of Flanders 2017 and 2018

We had a major club trip to Flanders earlier this year (2016), and I am planning to do something even bigger for 2018 (after a breather from tour operating!). However, the lure of the cobbles is such that a group (possibly groups) is forming for Ronde 2017 (starting in Antwerp). This is not a “club trip” as such, but register your plans on THIS FORUM.

As an aside, if you feeling like putting a club outing together for 2017, you’d be very welcome indeed. As a club we can look at provide some admin and financial support – as long as they are events open to any member.

Club Rides This Weekend

Please check the website home page – 6 rides (a record?) organised this weekend (though G3 not posted up yet.

Nick Patow is bravely leading a possibly damp Saturday ride. We then have a G1 non stop (Sam D – fast!), a G1/2 non stop (Graham -  a bit slower!) and G1/2 long ride with cafe stop (Russ – a bit slower still?!). Personally I might venture out on Paula’s G4 40 miler – my first outing since June (so needs a cake stop)

As a general observation, on reading write ups from last week, it was a puncture fest (George J winning the trophy with 4!!). Strongly advise heavy duty winter tyres and (please) mudguards.

Christmas Dinner – and Awards!!

Another reminder about the Christmas Dinner and Awards Night. CLICK HERE for all details on an event which is pretty outstanding for £14 per head. I think the capacity is limited to around 60, and will definitely sell out – so don’t hang around. There were some brief problems with the payment process – now resolved (thanks Steve Rodgers).

For those of you who won an annual award last year (not the individual TT ones that you keep), please return to Dave Bettinson as soon as possible, as he will need to do some fresh engraving! Don’t forget that we will be awarding ourselves the Inter-Club Championship Trophy as well – champagne moment.

Happy cycling!
