Dear Avanti member,

It has been quite a turbulent week in the TV news but fortunately there is a world outside of politics - there is the world of cycling which kicks off on Sunday with the biggest show on two wheels (without motors hopefully!) and that is the Tour de France!

At work I sit next to a very polite Swiss colleague and we talked about Cancellara and other Swiss sportsmen. He said Cancellara was very good but he had never won the Tour. It just shows that being one of the best cyclists of the modern era is not good enough for the general public if you don't shine at the Tour.

Avanti in the lead in the Time Trial Competition!

After last Saturday's 2-up time trial at the Isle of Grain where only four Avanti teams turned up, we are now in the lead halfway through the season (GSA 263 points, 7Oaks 221, SW 206). We have a great momentum and it is very encouraging. You don't need a fancy bike or a fancy kit, just turn up, sign up and ride on your ride bike for 10 miles as fast as you can. Everyone gets at least one point for taking part in the competition.

We have 10 more time trials before the end of the season including a 2-up time trial at Brands Hatch in early August and a 4-up time trial as the last event in September. It is about the right time to start thinking about 4-member teams consisting of riders with similar capabilities.

Johnny Edwards is doing a great job by maintaining and updating the Time Trial pages in a very nice and clear way. You can find it on the main website under Activities and then click on Time Trials.

The next event is the Brands Hatch Time Trial on Thursday at 19.30 in a lay-by just outside of Farningham on A20. It goes all the way to the Wrotham Hill top roundabout and back. So it is really a 5-mile drag up and then a 5-mile sprint down on fumes left in the tank.

Club Kit

The Kalas online shop with the club kit is now again open for two weeks. Jerseys, shorts, gillets and skin suits in many variations are available as well as arm warmers, leg warmers and caps. We have a small stock of arm warmers and caps available for the purchase directly from the club. If you have any questions about the kit, you can contact Steve at

Weekend Rides

We are entering the summer season when many members are already on holidays or planning holidays so ride leaders are in a short supply. We would like to encourage those who have been riding with the club but not leading yet to give it a go and to show us all new places, lanes, climbs or cafes. That's the beauty of riding with a club - exploring new places in a good company.

Saturday - Meet at the Royal Oak for a 40-mile ride led by Nick Patow for an 8am departure.

Sunday G1/G2 - Marek will be leading a 120km/75m ride which will follow the Sydenham Reliability Trial route. We will meet at 8.45am for a 9am departure. We will ride as a single group at an appropriate pace.

Sunday G3 - Phil is leading a squad of G3 riders to the Bewl Water following in the footsteps of G1/G2 who made their appearance last week. Meet at 9am for a 9.15 departure.

Sunday G4 - Jenny is leading G4 riders on a nice route to Hilden. Meet at 9am for a 9.15 departure.

As always, please indicate your attendance on the website to help with planning of rides.

Last but not least, Tony had a nasty crash last week but fortunately he suffered only surface injuries and should be back on the bike soon. Sam who crashed in a road race a few weeks ago is also recovering well. Bill has been back on the bike since his crash and he has been producing impressive numbers. We wish them all a speedy recovery!

Cycling is good, cycling is fun but please ride carefully and stay safe whether you are on a club run, on an evening spin or on holidays.

Have a very nice weekend!
