Dear Avanti fellow cyclist!

On Monday we had the first spring day and from now on the doom & gloom of the winter season should be finally over with the sunshine, pretty flowers, singing birds, flashy summer bikes, fancy summer kit and a plenty of club activities on the horizon.

The First Committee Meeting - Key Dates for your Diary

New activities from club marketing & recruiting through training & racing to further enhancements of the Avanti website were discussed. All will be revealed in a due course but for now here is a little teaser in a form key activities and dates for the next two months:

Sunday 24th April  – Club Open Day with all groups doing similar routes converging on the same free cafe stop. We will be inviting prospective members. It will be a month earlier than last year to attract new members before someone else does.

Saturday 30th April – First Cyclopark Session for 2016. All members are welcome with a focus on group riding skills. It will be similar to two very popular Cyclopark sessions in 2015 led by Lee Staples.

Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May – The club will be supporting entry costs to the SFA Sportive starting in Marden. Lee Powell is coordinating and we hope to have group entries at a range of levels.

Thursday 5th May  – We plan to run a CLUB ONLY formal Time Trial. It will be run as a formal event, with marshals, timing and race numbers. However, it will be a great chance for the less experienced/first timers to have a crack at this discipline and to learn from supportive and helpful club members. The most experienced riders in the club will be expected to marshal this one.

Monday 16th May – All club social event at the Queen’s Head in Green St Green. It will be a chance to meet up and find out about plans for the club for the rest of the year. A great opportunity to meet new members in particular.

Club Kit Update

The Kalas club shop is now closed but it will re-open on the 1st April (this is not a joke). A broad variety of jerseys, bib shorts, gilets and time trial skin suits are available as well as many accessories (arm warmers, leg warmers, caps and now even gloves and socks).

What has changed this year is that we need at least 5 big pieces for an order (various items in total from the whole club) and we need at least 10 pieces of the same accessory for an order.

Arm warmers look really cool. One is red and one is white to match colours of the Avanti jersey. If you need a proof, Lee Staples has a professionally taken picture on his Facebook page. We already have 4 interested members in arm warmers, we need 6 more for an order.

Any questions regarding the kit, please ask Steve Rodgers who has been tirelessly arranging orders and deliveries of the club. Merci, Steve!

Racing Activities

Johnnie Owen, Bill Fitzgerald, Andy South and a rather nicely tanned Lee Staples are racing in Category 3/4 SERRL Summer League Series, Race #4 this Easter Sunday. This race uses the Biddenden loop and is possibly one of the largest representations that Avanti have had for a SERRL series race. Johnnie is even drafting half of his family to help with marshalling. Good luck to you and we are looking forward to your write-ups!

Club Rides - Easter Weekend

Good Friday Ride - Patrick Norman leading

We already have 12 keen members indicating their attendance on the website and counting. It will be a usual 40-mile ride at a friendly pace. We will meet at 7.45 for an 8.00 departure from the Royal Oak Car Park. Typically we are back by 10.30 and we usually go for a coffee/tea/breakfast to a nearby cafe. New and prospective members are welcome. This ride replaces the usual Saturday ride.

Sunday G1/G2 Ride

A combination of holidays and racing means our Chairman Chris Dines is the only ride leader available at present. We will be taking it a little easier this week with a ride of about 55 miles through the lanes east of Tunbridge. It is a nice route and we will have a coffee break on the way back. It will be a G2 pace around 16mph and about 3,500ft of climbing. Sorry, no Garmin file available for this route.

Sunday G3 and G4 Rides

No rides have been posted yet at the time of writing (Thursday, 19.26 BST) but please keep an eye on the Avanti website for an update.

One more week to our Flanders 2016 expedition. Steve Rodgers has posted some information to help you to get prepared if you are taking part in this club expedition. See here for hints and tips.

Enjoy your Easter rides, Easter food and Easter eggs (those in particular)!
