Hi reader,

Following the tragic events that unfolded in Spain earlier in the week - we have something hopefully positive to bring attention to the land of sunshine and mountains - La Vuelta kicks off this evening with a team time trial! Can Froome pull off the first modern Tour-Vuelta double?  Stage 1 is in Nîmes - technical circuit around the old city - should be beautiful to watch. We have our own 4-up TTT at the legendary Brands Hatch in a few week's time - our season-finale for the interclub - so watch the pros for inspiration.

Revolve24 - Brands Hatch Weekend - and 4up TTT

Saturday 16th September it's our end of season bonanza at Brands Hatch - we need as many teams as possible out on the day - and it really doesn't matter if it's your first time - please discuss teams and availability on the forum and we'll bring together the best teams we can on the day!

It's a great event and is a great way to dip your toe into the water of this discipline - it can be a little intimidating at first - but this is on a safe circuit with no cars to worry about. When I first rode it, I couldn't help making F1 car engine noises in my head as I rode around!

 Event info for the TTT

We're also entitled to discount of 10% on entries to the other Revolve24 events that weekend - 24,12 and 6 hour solo and team endurance events. You can race against Jason Kenny!

I'm personally looking for a team-mate for the 6-hour on the Sunday and would be great to get a few teams together. I've done the 6-hour solo before and pairs would be more fun!

Info on entering here

3 Individual Time Trials Left

We have just 2 solo TTs left for sure - and we're single-digit figures behind 7Oaks Tri in the interclub competition - see results here - so the more people we can get to take part the better.

Next Saturday it's the infamous 21 mile hilly course at Gracious Lane.

The following Saturday it's the super-duper fast course on the A21 Tonbridge bypass - not for the faint-hearted. If you want to get a fast PB - this is the course to do it on. Hold on tight on the ski-slope-like drop onto the dual-carriageway though.

The weekend after that it's a 15 mile at Harrietsham that we're not sure is going ahead yet - it replaces the 4-up we had swapped for Brands Hatch. We need 2 helpers from the club if it is to go ahead. If you can help or ride - it will be good to know on the event so we can make arrangements - please let us know here.

National 12 hour Time Trial

Avanti had two entrants in this year's national 12 hour time trial - Chris Dines and Rob Grunfeld. Herculean efforts from both of them - congratulations! See the write up on the forum.

Brighton Big Dog

A picture paints a thousand words. I'll leave you to interpret this picture of Simon Heaton at last week's Big Dog - where Avanti had 3 teams and posted some great results. Much tea was consumed, refreshing post-ride beer - specially brewed for the event - all helped to replace liquids lost through hard efforts on the twisty, hilly course. Thanks to our mucky Yorkshireman - Simon Clarke - for arranging again. See the write ups in the forum for more highlights.

Race Support

It's great to see members representing the club at big competitions - and we are rolling out new rules that aim to encourage people to take part and fly the Avanti colours as they do so. Basically - if you take part in any cycling racing - not events like sportives - then the club will help to fund you. Details of what we're offering will be announced on the website and sent out in next week's newsletter.

Circuit of Kent

The fantastic local sportive - Circuit of Kent is happening again on Sunday 10th September. We've been supporting this event as a club for some time now - and we're aiming to (rather last-minute) organise entry through the club again - please discuss on the forum and watch out for news. Currently we're looking for a volunteer to make the arrangements with the event organisers - please step up if you can.

Whitstable Weekender

Due to the challenges of accommodation, logistics and cost of travel (ferries) to the Isle of Wight we’ve had to change the destination and date to Whitstable on the weekend of Sept 30th/Sun 1st Oct.

This is an all members club trip and those who have already expressed an interest in the IoW trip we have kept as registered, if this weekend is no longer suitable please amend accordingly. We need at least 10 to make the trip viable so PLEASE REGISTER YOUR INTEREST NOW!

With the support of some club resource we estimate the cost to be less than £100 including accommodation (2 sharing a room @ Travel Lodge) and this will include support from Vie en Velo (Angus) who will carry your overnight bag and offer a moving food/repair/broom wagon service.

You can email Chris chairman@gsavanti.co.uk if you have anything you would like to discuss.

Club Kit

Kit shop has closed for the month - August deliveries will be here in 4-5 weeks. The shop reopens again on 1st Septmber. As Jon Snow keeps reminding us - Winter is Coming - so make sure you're ready for the colder weather before it's too late.

Club Rides

As I write this - actually rewriting it as my original newsletter was lost in the ether - the Saturday ride will be a distant memory - Strava shows that it looked like a pretty chunky ride - well done!

The usual rides are on tomorrow with the addition of an earlybird G1(/2) ride led by Richard short - following the same route as the usual G1+2 rides but at 8am for those short on time.

• G1 - Richard Bingham - 55 mile local loop taking in the mighty Exedown.

• G2 - Chris Dines - same route as G1

• G3 - Ian Soper - 50 mile ride to Aylesford Priory

• G4 - Dave Bettinson - 42 mile ride to Brookside

The Tuesday group ride led by Lee Staples will also be on as usual if there is enough interest.

Please register your interest on the website by clicking on hyperlinks above. It only takes a moment and it helps us with planning and organising. If there are fewer than 4 attendees on the website the ride leader may choose to cancel the ride - so please click.

Where  it is available, please download the route to your Garmin - if you need help there is a little info on our ride leader forum.

RideWithGPS - Club Membersip

We now have setup club membership for RideWithGPS.com. This is the best site for planning and sharing routes and we've been using it for some time. One problem has been that as a free member of the site - or unregistered - you can download routes but you can't customise the turn-by-turn cues on downloads - it was only available to premium users. Now with the club membership - you no longer need a premium login yourself! Saving you the $10 per month fee! See the social media area of the website for details on how to register.

Bonus features include navigation - including offline with maps - in the mobile app - this is really helpful if you're venturing onto a route you're not familiar with and in particular somewhere that you might not have mobile signal for google maps if you get lost.

The club area also has a searchable, sortable list of routes - which I'll be tidying up and organising as our definitive list of routes for club rides.

Hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend's cycling fun - for me I've been trying to get to grips with my first tubeless setup with a new wheelset for the coming cyclocross season - sealant gunk everywhere!
