First off, don't forget that we will share your news, experiences, results etc via this newsletter. Just send through to news@avanti.co.uk.

I’ve just come back from a very brief trip to Provence where I (just about) managed to cycle up Ventoux (with Julian Small and Simon Sayer somewhere ahead of me ). It was so hot that I stopped at Chalet Reynard (6km from top) for not one, not two but three cold drinks. Chatting to the guy behind the bar about “business” he said that Strava has lost them trade – people don’t stop because of the impact on their segment time!! Not something I was concerned about. If anyone knows the area, we then cycled down to Sault and across the Luberon to Apt, with the temperature peaking at 43c . Unbelievable experience – cycling through a hair dryer!

Club Rides

Now I am back, fair to say the weather is a bit different – though still pretty good. I was due to send out this newsletter on Thursday night, but a pile of work caused a delay to this Saturday morning – so apologies! When I checked last night there was obviously going to be a big turnout for the Saturday ride Claire is leading (as I write). Please remember that the Saturday ride will ALWAYS accommodate different paces, often splitting in to different groups.

Tomorrow (Sunday) there are 4 rides. G1 (Richard Bingham leading) and G2 (me leading) will be taking the same route but at a different pace. It’s a new route for the Club that Richard knows, of over 80 miles. It takes us in to some beautiful territory including a café stop at the village square in Lenham. SEE HERE.

G3 are off to Hildenborough, led by Phil Hookaway, (SEE HERE) and G4 are off to Horley and the Italian Café, led by Dave Bettinson (SEE HERE).

G1 and G2 will set off 9am sharp – quite long rides, and G3 and G4 at 9.15am.

Can I just a big thanks to Alan Else who has kindly agreed to coordinate G3 rides going forward (and we are already organised through to end September).

Club Meeting

There is a club meeting at the Chelsfield this Monday evening – please get along if you can. There are various things we will be covering including an “all club” late September trip to the Isle of Wight (or some suitable location), 4 UP on the circuit at Brands Hatch, consideration for compulsory “basic” skills/behaviour training for Group Rides, and plenty more. SEE HERE.

Other events coming up.

Good luck to the the Avanti contingent at the Brighton Big Dog next weekend – lots of stuff on the website about this.

I’d also like to mention that Rob Grunfeld and myself are both competing in the National 12 Hour Time Trial next Sunday (13 August) in Cambridgeshire. Do think of me when I set off at my allocated time of 5.15am. Being Cambridgeshire, I’ve decided not to get over anxious about my weight – but whether I can hit my age weighted target of 186 miles in 12 hrs is another thing. If, as is possible, I conk out, then at least Rob will have another supporter somewhere on the A14 dual carriageway (the glamour……).

Local Council – Badgers Mount area.

I’ve been asked by the local Parish Council, in the Badgers Mount area, to meet with them and see how we can potentially better co-exist. They have concerns over regular incidents on, for example, Poll Hill – and so do many of us. Not sure where it will lead, but please email me on chairman@gsavanti.co.uk if you have any thoughts or ideas.

Enough waffle from me. Enjoy the weekend!
