Dear Avanti Member,

Let us start with the social side of cycling before we jump straight back in.

Kentish Killer Thank You Evening

After a very successful Kentish Killer 2016, we are holding a get together this coming Monday for everybody involved. All Avanti members welcome and we will be joined by the Air Ambulance team.

There will be a free round of drinks and buffet food, a brief overview of the feedback we got from the KK rider survey, plus a chance for helpers to pick up a free commemorative Mug or a T-shirt if you have not got one yet.

The evening will start at 7.45pm on Monday 14th at the Queen's Head in Green St Green where we have space reserved for ourselves. As ever it would help us organise things if you could RSVP on the event page.

We will also use this gathering to discuss preparations and training for our Flanders expedition in early April.

Racing Activities

Last Saturday Johnnie Owen, Paul Allen & Graham Channon put GS Avanti firmly on the race map at a very cold and wintery Cyclopark. The three brave racers all picked up Top 10 places in the LVRC Criterium. Special mention to Paul Allen, our new rising race star who got on the podium with 3rd place - well done Paul!

The club has 10 riders signed up for the SERRL Summer Race Series. The LVRC road race in May has also attracted 7 riders from the club so far. If you would like to give racing a go, then join the Racing & Training forum on the club website and get in touch with Johnnie Owen (Avanti Racing Captain)  to find out more.

Kit Shop Still Open
The Kalas club shop is still open online. See the access details here.

The shop is normally open for the first 2 weeks of a month, unless we have fewer than 5 items in the order, in which case it will remain open until we have an order. It will then take about 4 weeks to be delivered.

Steve Rodgers is out kit coordinator if you have any further questions. I have personally bought quite a few items from the Kalas shop (both summer and winter outfits) and I must say I am very happy with the quality, fit, look and practicality. Our club kit really looks impressive and professional when we wear it at races, sportives and club rides. Blue legwarmers are probably not everybody's cup of tea but I quite like them. :-)

Club Rides this Weekend

Saturday Ride - Johnnie Owen is leading

It will be as always a 40 miler, at a comfortable pace that accommodates anybody who turns up. Guests are always welcome, as it’s a good introduction to club riding. Meet at the Royal Oak with a departure at 7:45am. Please indicate on the website your attendance.

G1/G2 Sunday Ride - Kent Invicta Grimpeur 100

G1/G2 will tackle this audax (it is a cycling event in which participants attempt to cycle long distances within a pre-defined time limit and it is a non-competitive event where the success is measured by its completion).

We will meet at the Otford Scout Hut at 9am for a 9.30am start. There will be probably a group riding down from the G around 8.30am. Please keep an eye on the website for details.

Steve Rodgers will be leading this 100km ride which will take you in one direction back to the base (50km) and then again in the opposite direction back to the base (50km) so you will tackle all hills up and down.

G3 Sunday Ride

It has not been posted yet but please keep an eye on the website for an update.

G4 Sunday Ride - Dave Bettinson leading a 55-mile ride to Horley

G4 will up the mileage into Surrey, as they forecast dry and warmer weather. To aid the increased mileage the terrain is fairly flat, especially near Gatwick. The Italian Cafe has good food and coffee. Expect a good steady pace if stronger riders share the work. The route will lead via Sundridge, Pilgrims Way, Oxted, Blindley Heath,Smallfield, Copthorne, Horley.

Have fun on Saturday and Sunday, and stay safe and visible on the road!
