It’s clearly time to shed all that winter kit and get you and the bike in to summer mode – tomorrow (Sunday) is forecast at a balmy 24c! True to form I now have a heavy cold, but hopefully a big dose of sunshine will sort that out. Hope to see lots of Avanti tops at the Green!

You will see in my note below that we are short of people coming forward to lead rides – and it’s our policy that we look to have ride leaders whenever possible. If you are interested in helping please drop me a line (or Steve Rodgers or Dave Bettinson) – also come along to the Cyclopark session on 15 April where we will be practicing group ride skills and leading. The club now has 140 active members, and works best when lots of individuals find some time to support activities.

Rides this Weekend

I’m writing this when the Saturday ride is due to finish – blazing sunshine! There is more of the same tomorrow.

From now on we are aiming to run clearly separate G1 and G2 rides – though often with same route and same café stop if the G1 pace proves too much for some. Tomorrow Sam is leading G1 (RSVP HERE) and I am leading G2 (RSVP HERE), both on a beautiful 68 mile loop to Bewl water, taking in a favourite café. G1 rides can be as fast as the Group want to make them, but G2 will be at an average speed of around 16/17mph.

We are currently short of volunteers for ride leading, and you will see on the site that we have nobody in place for either G3 or G4 tomorrow. The club has an increasingly large membership, so this is something we all need to sort – and will do.

As far as tomorrow is concerned, the weather forecast is fantastic. If you are looking for a G3 or G4 paced ride, please get to the Green by 9.15am and organise amongst yourselves – don’t think there will be any shortage of riders.

Cyclopark Sessions

We have our first Cyclopark session on Saturday 15th April, running from 12:00 to 15:00. These are led by Lee Staples, and all club members are encouraged to attend. We hire the circuit for private use, and there is no charge to club members.

For the 1st session Lee will be focusing on cornering, group riding & leading, TT starts and also planning on taking a bottle + mussette from a helper. Please (PLEASE!) register your attendance on the club website. CLICK HERE.

We have also booked Cyclopark for sessions on Friday 21 April (evening) and Saturday 13 May (3pm to 6pm)

April Fools 10 Mile TT

Despite the large group taking part in the Ronde Van Vlaanderen (below), we also had a record Avanti turnout for the April Fool’s Day Inter-Club TT. We won this as well. Results are not yet up on the Avanti site, but SEE HERE on the Sydenham Wheelers site.

Finally, 10 of us had great fun competing in the 241km Ronde Sportive – the day before the Pro race. Starting in Antwerp (heavy rain and cold), we finished in warm sunshine in Oudenaarde having tackled the 17 climbs and lengthy cobbled sessions. All the group cycled strongly. On the Sunday (and go to the club’s Facebook pages for more) we had a brilliant spot on the Oude Kwaremont – complete with beers, food and big screens. Gilbert made his big break right in front of us. Next year I will be organising a much bigger party for this event – taking in the shorter ride options as well.

Have a great weekend – and enjoy cycling in the heat.
