Dear reader

The weather is looking great this weekend, so hopefully many of us will be out on our bikes enjoying the sunshine.

The curry night last night proved to be a select affair, with just six of us enjoying the evening. A quick pint in The Coach and Horses Farnbourgh was followed by a most enjoyable meal in the curry shop just down the road.
I suspect the short notice given on this one played a big part in the modest numbers this time. Hopefully with a little more time to spot the event on the website calendar
for the next event we can attract a bigger crowd. It's always good to get together away from the rides and meet and socialise with members you perhaps wouldn't otherwise meet. We're a friendly bunch :-)

On the subject of friendly, Belmondos Cafe became even more cycle friendly in the week, with owner Michael coming outside to tell us his Cycling joke....

A chap goes into a cycle shop and asks the assistant if he can talk to someone about wheels.
The assistant says "sorry, the wheel man isn't available to talk at the moment, but hopefully I can help, I'm his spokesman" Boom Boom.
I can't promise a new joke every time you roll up there, but the coffee is always good.

Rides this weekend.

All starting at the 'G' (Royal Oak pub, Green St Green)

Saturday. A ride to the Rye, incorporating the usual 40 mile ride for those time pressed.
There's an 8.00 am start for each option this week, and it will be a prompt one with the coast awaiting those on the longer option. If you are intending to come along, please sign up this evening so we have a clear understanding of numbers and groups etc . Downloading the route is a great help too. A message from our sportive coordinator, Tony LeVey.

As many of you may know, I am now responsible for coordinating sportive activity within the club. We have a team of twenty plus entered for the San Fairy Ann event on 7th May and I am looking to get a group together for this year’s Circuit of Kent Sportive on 9th September – this has been well attended by the club in the past, with distances to suit everyone; 40km, 80km & 130km. More to follow on this one.

In the meantime, I would welcome feedback on other events you participated in throughout the year, whether that be sportives or audax, such as the Man of Kent, which Claire W (Woman of Kent!), Rob G and Sefi D took part in recently. If they are good, we can add them to the calendar for next year.

Also, I shall be looking into the idea of repeating something similar to the 2017 Whitstable weekend later in the season (probably early October). It would be a Saturday ride out / Sunday ride back with an overnight stop (Premier Inn or similar I would guess), some food and light refreshments (!).
I am keen to get all club riders involved in this, so to suit all G’s, I was thinking to have longer and shorter rides all finishing at the same overnight stop (obviously not Whitstable in that case…). Planning will start soon. Look out for this on the web site and add your comments there…

Cyclopark Training.

The first training session of 2018 at Cyclopark has been booked for Saturday 5th May 2018 15:00-17:00.
If you're one of our newer members, and maybe just starting to ride in groups, it would be great to get you along to this event to hone your skills and improve your confidence.

The aim of the session is to introduce and improve cycling skill useful for club group rides and time trials such as cornering, group riding and leading.
Great session for riders just beginning and/or wanting to improve – practise existing skills.
The session will be lead by certified British cycling coaches Lee Staples and Richard Liston.
The cyclopark is a purpose built traffic free environment, has great facilities (changing/parking) and the coffee is pretty good too.
Event details here.

Ride London 100 ballot
We have a team place allocated to us by British Cycling for a mixed team, two gents, two ladies. There has been good interest in filling the boys places and the club will draw two lucky winners. Before that however, we are needing a second lady member to come forward to complete the team (any more than one further declaration of interest and the ladies will go into a draw also).
Drop a line to Alan via ljpiphone.avanti@gmail.com and a message will get passed to Alan.

Making the most of Avanti.
After Tony LV posted a Strava "Workout" in the week complete with picture of him proudly standing beside his lawnmower after cutting the grass in Avanti colours, it made me wonder what else we might use our club kit for ?
Does anyone else make use of their kit in other walks of life ?

With that thought circulating, all that's left to say is enjoy the sunshine, and don't forget to put the suncream on.

Have great weekend, and ride safe.

BTW - Below is something my daughter sent to my wife last week !
