Thanks, Jonathon. As I said on the other thread, it was tight near the top. 1.4 seconds quicker would have seen me move up three places! And Steve Gale just 1.9 seconds behind me, with you just a few behind him. A few peddle strokes.
You were the rider behind me and I could hear you moaning and groaning after the finish in pain so knew you must have put in an almighty effort. Nice one!
Awesome display by the Bigfoot's Paul Sewell to break three minutes. The event attracted some very good climbers from Bigfoot and Dulwich. With Catford the week after it could become a pretty significant event in the years to come on the hill climb scene. A great success for the club.

Also, nice to see a rather fat Jan Ullrich making an appearance: http://www.gsavanti.co.uk/photo/hill-climb-1-10-11-finish-line-10
Ha!
Up close you're a ball of muscle. You must have amazing power to climb like you do.
Permalink Reply by Chris Dines on October 3, 2011 at 19:26 Doug, well done for getting the best Avanti time. You're quite right, the gaps in times are very small indeed.
Have to say that the times are a lot quicker than I was expecting (so I won't mention my own time recorded during a training run!).
As starter I saw everyone go off. All the quickest times, not surprisingly, were by those who seemed to fly off right from the start and have some real speed going into that turn.
Nice event. I should have brought the sun tan cream!

Permalink Reply by Frankie Hobbins on October 3, 2011 at 21:00 People won't know about the second hill climb challenge on the way home. Frankie said we should race up polhill (think he wanted to show he was still better than me). We got to the bottom and he sprinted off like a mad man. I managed to get back to him and then came through and counter attacked, but he stayed on my wheel. He then said he wasn't trying anymore and we eased off. A few seconds later he sprinted around me to take the win! I had nothing left anyway.
We stopped at the top for a break, out of breath. Think it was harder than Exedown.
Permalink Reply by michael farla club captain on October 3, 2011 at 21:02 Agree with Chris - Doug especially was out of saddle till he disappeared out of sight !
I wasn't at the top to note the 'pain' on riders' face tho !
well done all !
Permalink Reply by Steve Gale on October 3, 2011 at 21:11 If Michael takes the bribe and gives Avanti guys a shove I reckon we can edge out Bigfoot next year.
Good luck to all of you doing Yorks on Sunday.
Permalink Reply by Johnny Edwards on October 3, 2011 at 23:03 Amazing times by all, especially Doug, Steve and Jonathan.
Quite frankly I am amazed that everyone managed to get under 6 minutes (another reason why I am glad I was busy and unable to attend).
Permalink Reply by Richard Edmonds on October 4, 2011 at 7:33 A great morning and a big thank you to all concerned with the planning and organsiation on the day. Great atmosphere and turn-out. Can remember sitting in a meeting when Dan proposed the idea and with Mick has certainly added something else to the Avanti parcours!
Excellent result Doug! What did you have for breakfast? Saw you at the bottom - you certainly got off to a flyer and must have kept it pretty much going to the top. Steve and Jonathan great rides too. All in all good Avanti numbers.
Managed to pull my foot out after a couple of metres at the start and then for some reason eased off at the top before the line, age! Any excuse!
Amazing times which will be hard to beat given the conditions.Reckon an open event next year would attract at least double the numbers. Here's to 2012.
