Last night I had an enjoyable evening at the Brands Hatch TT – I can’t ride at present, but it’s fun watching others pushing themselves to the max!! GS Avanti were marshaling last night (and thanks to all the term who did a great job), and we also have a lot of riders out injured, ill or on holiday. Despite that, and thanks to lots of new club members participating, we still had the biggest number of entrants AND a draft check of the results suggests we might have extended our lead in the competition. If we are going to win for the first time, we really need to start organising pairings for the 2Up on 4 August and teams for the 4Up on 10 September.

A date for your diary – club Social/Get Together

Either Monday 15 August or Wednesday 17 August we will have an all club social. We have a lot of new joiners, and it will be a chance to talk about club plans and some of the events we have running during the rest of the year. More on this next week.

Club rides this weekend.

Delighted to say we have five fantastic rides lined up this weekend. All start from the Royal Oak Car Park – if you want pre-ride coffee and comfort break, pop into Poppies café which is on the road back towards Orpington.

Patrick is leading the Saturday morning 40 miler, starting at 8am. Just to reiterate for anyone new to the club, this is a mixed ability, social ride – all welcome. The pace is set to accommodate those who turn up. More information HERE.

The four Sunday rides:

• Paula is leading a G4 ride to Tonbridge Swimming Pool Café, via Penshurst. It’s 40 miles, with a speed average of 12/13 mph. More Information HERE. Depart 9.15am

• Dave is leading a G3 ride of 70 miles with a planned stop at Weeks Bakery and Café in Goudhurst. Lots of lanes and lumps en route to the café, and a more direct route home. Assume a pace of 14/15mph average. More details HERE. Depart 9.15am

We’ve had bigger and bigger groups out for G1 and G2 recently, with the G1 pace clearly moving up a few notches. We’ve been running different groups, but this time we have completely different routes. I suspect G1 will be at a challenging tempo!

• Simon is leading a G2 ride on a fairly flat route Newdigate and back. This will be a decent pace at around 16/17mph. More details, and GPS file HERE. Depart 9am

• Steve is leading the G1 ride to Aylesford Priory. This is a fairly flat route, so expect to work at a good pace and as a group. Average speed 18mph+ depending on the mood! More detail and GPS file HERE. Depart 9am

Club Kit

Message from Steve Rodgers:

We've had a steady stream of new club members and it's been great to see more and more people out in club colours.
If you haven't yet collected your fantastic new club jersey - please get in touch.
Reminder to new members that you can buy more kit - tops, shorts, gilets and skinsuits - through the online shop which opens on the first of each month for advance orders.
More details on the website.
I've received the latest stock of kit from last month's order, including Avanti gloves and shoe-covers and will be adding to our RiderHQ shop - get in touch if you want to try them on for size.
We still have some stock left of medium caps and various sizes of summer-weight armwarmers - perfect for Alpine descents if you're lucky enough to be headed out that way.
I've been quality-testing the summer caps every week and they work really well - soak up the sweat and keep it from dripping into your eyes.

Strava Comp!

This month we've been running a pilot of a Stava segment competition just for fun - and kudos.
The idea is we pick 4 segments and you have to ride each as fast as you can - SAFELY - as often as you like - your best time is picked automatically.
All 4 times get summed up and the fastest overall time wins.
There are loads of members of the Avanti Strava Club that have logged times but haven't yet signed up
The leaderboard and access details are in the forum post HERE.
At the time of writing, the fastest overall time is just over 11 mins for 4 segments which are all local to The G.
Depending on the results and participants we'll work out the format for future competitions.
We may have separate categories for each level of rider - depending on the group you normally ride in - so that there's something for everyone.
Also  - see the forum post - I'm looking to gather a list of popular segments for future competitions - if you have any particular favourite - please share!

That’s all for now – have fun on the bike this weekend.
