Dear Avanti Member,

Writing an obituary is not something I ever expected to do as a Chairman of a cycling club but, as most of you will know, Steve Wand died in a cycling accident last week. However I have no doubt he’d want everyone to enjoy every minute of their cycling, and his family have reiterated that. As a TT specialist he’d certainly have turned out for the first TT of the year (see below) if it wasn’t for the fact that he was due to go to Flanders with us!

Steve Wand R.I.P

On the morning of Good Friday, a lovely early Spring day, club member Steve Wand died in a tragic accident when he came off his bike. We understand nobody else was involved, and it happened on the descent of Hosey Hill near Westerham. Steve was with some of his cycling mates from Sidcup.

Steve was a great athlete (a gentle giant), focused on triathlons and time trialling. He was a member of several clubs, and joined GS Avanti a year ago. He’s been a regular at the Inter-Club 10’s as well as turning out for Sunday rides. He was also due to join our big party going to Flanders.

Our sympathies go to the family he left behind. We’ve been in touch with his wife Janice, who said how much Steve was looking forward to going over to Belgium. At her suggestion we are now organising for one of Steve’s close friends (another triathlete) to join us on the trip. We will be wearing black arm bands at the event as a mark of respect – but Janice was clear that Steve would want everyone to enjoy the whole weekend and have some fun, as he would have done.

We are also looking at the possibility of creating an award/trophy named after Steve – probably time trial related. Thoughts welcome on this one.

Time Trials are back!

The 2016 Time Trial season kicks off this Saturday, 2nd April at 9am. Whilst many TT regulars will be away this weekend playing on the cobbles of Flanders, there will still be a few of us heading down to start the season on the Sundridge 10 mile TT course:

The 2015 inter club TT league was a tightly fought competition between us, 7 Oaks Tri and Sydenham Wheelers which went right down to the wire.  I feel this is the year we will improve on last year’s results; GS Avanti were leading just before the final 4-up event where we slipped to 2nd place.

It is worth mentioning that everyone who competes and finishes each Time Trial earns valuable points for the club (regardless of your position or time)!  So come along and give it a whirl especially if you haven't tried one yet. It is fun and your club needs you!

Kit News

The Kalas club shop will be open again on Tuesday 5th April for 2 weeks. As it's a busy period for our supplier, the order would take up to 6 weeks to deliver once the window closes - so would be expected end May.

Please contact Steve on if you are interested in any accessories this year - caps and warmers specifically - as we'll be ordering a batch of these to hold in stock for the club.

Club Rides this Weekend

There will be no organised G1 or G2 rides this weekend – the great majority of regulars are in Flanders (or injured). However, please look out for information on G3 and G4 rides which will be posted up on Friday. If you are riding in a slower group than you are used to, please respect the pace set by the ride leader. They are group rides.

Have a good weekend and enjoy getting on the bike – wherever that is!
